A short break from drawing Jessica Barden, this is a quicker rougher drawing of a face that could very well be used for a character in a comic about organised crime. No wonder, as the photo is taken from the cover of a novel by Andrea Camilleri - his stories typically revolve around murder cases involving the mafia in Sicily.

Another study of Jessica's expressive face. The hair is unfinished, as I wanted to focus my effort on the face.

This is drawn with a harder pencil on a smoother paper (with less grain).
One of the drivers this year was to improve the drawing of facial expressions, so I decided to choose in some cases pictures of the same person in different positions and expressions. This should aid (I hope) level up in character design for comics.
Jessica is very expressive and she nails this role, I really enjoyed my attempt to capture the expression in her eyes.
Is is also my attempt to start transitioning from line drawing to include more elements of value drawing to better depict volume and lighting.

This is my second portrait on that day (to compensate for the fact that I missed a few days, I tried to do more than one drawing on others).
One of my main struggles this year, you will notice, is hair. Hair is time consuming to do, and I find it hard. And since my focus will be mostly on faces and expressions, for some portraits the hair is only sketched out. Maybe I make next year's challenge about hair :)

So I decided to take again my summer challenge of drawing a human face every day!
This year I decided to refine the terms slightly.
I drew this portrait as a wedding present for my brother-in-law and wife, who kindly flew and hotelled us to their wedding in Montevideo.

This portrait took me quite a few hours. I lost count, but possibly an aggregate of 24?
This summer I set myself a challenge to draw one portrait a day.
Here are all the drawings that came out of that challenge.
This July (2019) I took advantage of a sabbatical from my day job (software engineering) in order to take a summer course on drawing comics at Escola Joso in Barcelona.
Check out my final project.
